ISLAMABAD: Despite the opposition’s outrage, the National Assembly on Monday approved proposals to lengthen the tenure of services heads and expand the number of Supreme Court judges.
Speaker Ayaz Sadiq chaired the National Assembly, which started more than two hours late.
The move to suspend question hour, made by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, was accepted. Chanting “no, no” throughout the session, the opposition fiercely rejected the proposal.
The Practice and Procedure Amendment Ordinance was introduced by the Law Minister during the session, and a bill to expand the number of Supreme Court judges to 34 was tabled.
He clarified that in order to lower the backlog of outstanding cases and support the constitutional court, more judges are needed.
In order to expand the number of judges, the House also amended the “Islamabad High Court Act.”
The new law will raise the number of IHC judges from nine to twelve.
Bills to prolong the terms of all service chiefs were later approved by the National Assembly as well. The 1952 Pakistan Army Act, the 1952 Air Force Act, and the 1952 Pakistan Navy Act were all amended.
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif introduced all of the laws pertaining to the tenure of military chiefs.
