UNITED NATIONS (AFP): Antonio Guterres, the head of the United Nations, expressed his outrage on Sunday at the “shocking levels of death, injury, and destruction” in north Gaza, where Israeli forces are conducting attacks they claim are intended to stop Hamas from regrouping.
According to Stephane Dujarric, Guterres’ spokesperson, “the situation of Palestinian citizens imprisoned in North Gaza is intolerable.”
“With civilians buried beneath debris, the ill and injured without access to life-saving medical care, and families without food and shelter, the Secretary-General is appalled by the horrific levels of death, injury, and damage in the north.”
According to Gaza’s health ministry, hundreds of individuals have been killed in recent weeks, and over 60,000 more have been forced to escape, the spokesman said.
“With rare exceptions, Israeli authorities continue to deny repeated attempts to transfer humanitarian goods necessary for survival – food, medication, and shelter — putting countless lives in danger,” Dujarric stated.
“The Secretary-General restates his demands for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional and immediate release of all captives, and accountability for crimes under international law in the name of humanity.”
