ISLAMABAD: Upon his arrival in Islamabad for a four-day bilateral visit to meet with Pakistan’s civil and military leadership and to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Council of the Heads of Government meeting, Premier of the State Council of China Li Qiang was accorded a red carpet welcome.

A high-level team, including ministers and senior officials from the ministries of trade and foreign affairs, the National Development and Reform Commission, and the China International Development Cooperation Agency, accompanied the Chinese prime minister.

After eleven years, this was the first visit to Pakistan by a Chinese premier.

Premier Li was greeted warmly by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, senior government officials, and members of the federal cabinet, including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, upon his arrival at the airport.

Two kids, dressed in traditional Pakistani attire, gave the dignitary roses as a 21-gun salute in the background announced his presence. The dignitary was saluted by the Pakistani military’s static guards.

The Chinese Premier’s motorcade route, along with other prominent crossroads in the federal capital, were adorned with banners bearing phrases that portrayed the well-established bilateral ties between China and Pakistan.

The Chinese leader will later meet Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the PM House, where he will be formally welcomed and given a guard of honor. To address all facets of Pakistan-China relations, including commercial and economic relationships as well as cooperation under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), the two prime ministers will meet at the level of a delegation.

Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) would be signed by both parties to enhance bilateral collaboration on CPEC-II and other major projects. The Gwadar International Airport will also be essentially opened by the Chinese leader.

Premier Li will not only attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization’s Council of the Heads of Government Meeting in Islamabad on October 15–16, but he will also pay a visit to President Asif Ali Zardari and meet with Pakistan’s top military officials and parliamentary leaders.

We will assess the status of ongoing projects, including CPEC, and look into potential new areas of mutually beneficial collaboration. The All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership between China and Pakistan is essential to the peace and prosperity of the region, the speaker said.
