Jewish School in Canada Targeted by Gunfire Again

MONTREAL (AFP): According to authorities, a Jewish school in Toronto was the target of gunfire on Saturday for the second time this year. Since the beginning of the Gaza War, Canada has seen an increase in anti-Semitic incidents.

According to officials, shots were fired from a car at the Bais Chaya Mushka girls school at around 4 am (0800 GMT), however no one was hurt and the only damage sustained was a broken glass.

Authorities think there is a connection between the two shootings because the school in Toronto’s North York neighbourhood was the subject of a similar incident in May.

Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish year, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau expressed his “great distress” over the occurrence.

“My heart goes out to the children, staff, and parents who must be afraid and heartbroken today as we wait for more details,” Trudeau wrote in a post on X.

He said, “We will not allow anti-Semitism stand—it is a terrible and dangerous type of bigotry.”

In May, the Jewish organization B’nai Brith Canada released a research stating that between 2022 and 2023, anti-Semitic incidents in the nation more than doubled.

A Jewish school in Montreal was shot at twice in one week in November 2023, but no one was hurt.
